UNDER 23 WORLD CHAMPIONHIPS QUALIFICATION MATCH

On Saturday, 21 September 2007, the national teams from Zimbabwe and South Africa met each other in Masvingo, Zimbabwe to decide who will represent Africa at the Under 23 World Championships to be held in Chinese Taipei in September 2008. The match was played outdoors at the Mucheke Stadium. A small but partisan crowd attended the match and they were entertained to a very physical and hard fought match.

The final score of 22 – 11 in favour of the South African team is maybe not what was expected. It must be said that the South African team battled to adjust to the extreme heat, the physical and high tempo play of their opponents and the rule interpretation of the match referee. These factors had a definite influence on our young and inexperienced players and instead of concentrating on their own game plan, they got enticed into playing a similar game as the opponents. They also got involved in a lot of off the ball incidents which led to further concentration loss. The players of the national senior team, with some exceptions, also did not fire on all cylinders and did not produce the normal string of goals as was expected of them.

Goal scorers for South Africa were Liandri Theÿse (8), Elsandri van Niekerk (6), Werner Basson (3), Ettiene Stander (2), JP Jacobs (1), Clarissa Nel (1) and Charl Pinches (1).

All in all, this match should be good preparation for the senior national players that will participate in the Senior World Championships later this year. Hopefully they will carry the lessons through with them.

REFEREE- AND COACHING WORKSHOPS

At this stage it seems that the annual Club Championships for the B-teams from each Region, won't be able to take place due to the many players and officials going to Zimbabwe.

We will however consider the possibility of it still taking place, depending on the amount of interest from the Regions. I urge you to please contact me should you wish to partake.

Referee- and Coaching workshops will be presented by Daniel de Rudder and Felix Meeus (both from Belgium), on Tuesday, 25 September, 2007 and Wednesday, 26 September, 2007.

Please contact me before 15 September, 2007 should you wish to attend. EVERYBODY IS WELCOME!!!

SA REFEREES TO EUROPE

AN ARTICLE RETRIEVED FOR THE IKF'S WEBSITE - Published Saturday, 24 March, 2007

In a drive initiated by the IKF to increase the pool of elite international referees, two referees from the Republic of South Africa will undertake a rigorous training program in Belgium. Under the guidance of five referee trainers they will practice as well as analyze the performance of their colleagues in the premier grade Belgian competition.

Charles Byleveld and Karel Mwale are promising prospects for South African korfball and the international scene. Charles is aspiring to establish himself as a referee trainer in his country while korfball fans will remember the name of Karel’s brother, affectionately known as "golden goal" George, who clinched victory for South Africa in their encounter with Slovakia at the 2003 World Championships.

The IKF Referees Committee continues to build the capability and capacity of its pool of elite international referees and acknowledges the limited access that referees outside of Europe have in terms of exposure to high-level competitions. Initiatives such as this allow targeted referees, identified as having the potential to make it the elite level, to gain valuable experience and learning in countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium.
