ZIMBABWE vs SA SENIOR NATIONAL TEAM - 23 September, 2006

ZIMBABWE NATIONAL TEAM IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Zimbabwe Senior National Team arrived in Pretoria, South Africa, late on Thursday evening after a very long bus trip from Mutare in Zimbabwe. Tired, but looking ahead to Saturday’s international match against their neighboring South African counterparts.  The match will take place on Saturday, 23 September, 2006 on the Protea’s homeground, the Gezina Indoor Sports Hall in Pretoria.

The Zimbabwean Team consists of:-

  • Patricia Goodson
  • Progress Ngwende
  • Everjoy N Muzana
  • Brightone Mugayi (M)
  • Roseline T Mukweva
  • Godfrey Kwangwari
  • Golden Dzitiro (M)
  • Juliet Cheusinje Juma (F)
  • Silas Ziwono
  • Angeline Mamvura
  • Venissa Muchayi
  • Washington Ngoma
  • Brian Muringa
  • Charles G Chinembiri
  • Rosemary Muzvidziwa (F)
  • Tendai Mugore (F)
  • Shupikai Berejena (M)
  • Zhuliyawo Chapuke
President: Tarirai Chadebah
Team Manager: Joseph Nyakuromba
Head Coach: Nyasha Biriwasha

Daniel de Rudder, the current National Coach of New Zealand, who is in South Africa already to assist the South African Korfball Federation with their development program, will assist the Zimbabwean team today, 22 September, with their preparation for the match, by training the team during morning and afternoon sessions.  The team shall probably use Daniel again during the pre-match training session on Saturday morning.  This will definitely be a valuable experience for the relative newcomers to the game to be trained by a coach of such high esteem.

FIRST ALL-AFRICA INTERNATIONAL

In a historic and memorable occasion the senior national teams of Zimbabwe and South Africa clashed on Saturday, 23 September, 2006 in Pretoria (RSA). The initial aim of the match was to decide who will represent Africa at the Senior World Championships in Brno in 2007, but this was totally overshadowed by the historic significance of the match. What made this such a historic event was that this was the first korfball match, ever to be played, between two countries from the African Continent on African soil. Korfball is indeed now firmly established on the African Continent and this small event will hopefully grow towards something huge (typical to Africa).

Although one can elaborate on the historic significance of the match indefinitely, the match statistics are also important and need mentioning. The final score of 33 - 6 (first half 14 - 2), in favour of South Africa, does not give a true reflection of the game as it was very obvious that the South Africans took their feet of the gas pedal in the second half and played a more relaxed and less intensive game. Their defence intensity also dropped remarkably and thereby the Zimbabweans created more shooting chances. The Zimbabwean team was definitely overawed by the occasion. The stand-in coach, Daniel de Rudder from Belgium, had his hands full trying to get this team to structure their attack. On defence this team also made mistakes which led to easy scoring chances for the South Africans. It was obvious from the match that experience cannot be taught - time is the best teacher. Because of the standard of play of the Zimbabwean team, the South Africans did not play anywhere close to what we came to expect from them as seen during the Commonwealth Games and Friends Tournament in Great Britain, in July. Another significant fact is that the first ever Zimbabwean goal was scored by Angeline Mamvura, ten minutes before the end of the first half.

NASHUA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS (25-27 AUGUST, 2006)

This coming weekend, 25 - 27 August 2006, sees the 9 th edition of one of the premium events on the South African Korfball Federation’s calendar, namely the Nashua Club Championships. This Tournament will take place in the sports hall in Gezina, Pretoria. Through the years we have seen some exciting korfball being played during this Tournament and this year is expected to be no different. The standard might prove even better due to the standard of the teams entered.

Last year’s winner, University of Johannesburg Korfball Club (Gauteng Central), will definitely be the early favourites to lift the trophy on Sunday because of their track record during the past year’s performance against some of the teams also entered in this tournament. It also helps that four Senior National players ( Luther Grobler, Riaan Niemann, Sonja Greyling and Gelinda Friedman) form the basis on which the team builds it’s playing strategy and attack plans. During the Commonwealth Games and Friends Tournament in London (July 2006), Luther Grobler scored the most goals in the Tournament and against some of the best players in the Commonwealth. Taking this shooting form into the Club Championships can make it difficult for the defenders of the other teams present. This is a well trained side which should produce a good team performance. Overall this seems to be a very well balanced side which could be too much on the day for most of the other teams to contend with.

Titans Korfball Club (Gauteng East), attending their 4 th Championship, followed-up their 2 nd position during last year’s Championship with constant good performances during this year’s league season and could definitely be a contender for the trophy come Sunday. Heleen Bennetts, Liandri Theÿse, Heinrich Myburgh and Anthony Muller are the players in the team with international experience on Senior and Under 23 level and should be the players to look out for.

The team representing Northern Cape, City of Angels Korfball Club, is the unknown factor in this years competition. This team is made up of young players not known to most of us. Although all of them have played in Northern Cape Regional teams, only Johan Vermeulen has represented South Africa at Under 23 level during the 2001 World Championships in South Africa. Since then he has not played much korfball and has only started again late this year. Cormari van den Heever represented South Africa at Under 19 level at the Junior World Cup and Hanri Fick and Roelof du Plessis represented South African as Under 16 players at the Youth Talent Cup. Although this team has some very good individual players, there is some doubt about its abilities as a team as well as the sharpness of the players due to the lack of match practice. The team has issued a challenge to all the other participants and has stressed that they might have some surprises for the other teams. Their motto for the Tournament is “Go big or go home”.

Participating in its 5 th Championships, Rustenburg Korfball Club ( North West), with a best ever finish of 3 rd during the 2003 Championships, has during the years shown much promise but just could not make the breakthrough. Given the ladies players that the team has this year, we will hopefully see the team play to its full potential. The physical strength of Ilse Kleynhans, Bianca le Grange, Monique Botha and Georgina Human might prove to be too much for the ladies of the other teams, although their shooting abilities might be suspect due to the lack of match practice and training. If the men of the team can produce some good support for the ladies, and stand up to the men of the other teams, this might just be the year for the Club.

Coastals Korfball Club is definitely the Club with the most experience in the Nashua Club Championships as this will be their 5 th appearance. For most of us Coastals Korfball Club is an unknown name. In the past the Club has participated under the names of Amanzimtoti and Bayview Korfball Club. Because of the distance to Kwa-Zulu Natal and the fact that most of us have only seen these players once this year, during the SAKF Regional Tournament, and the fact that we have not seen them play together as a team, will make it difficult to predict the team’s performance during the upcoming weekend. Although Ettienne Potgieter is a Senior National player and we know what he is capable of, the team’s ability to outscore most of the other teams can be questioned. Coupled with the fact that some of the players, like Michael Robbertze, will not be able to attend the tournament. Their experience and performance will be missed. As in the past, the team will be well coached and extremely well conditioned, but because as already mentioned, the lack of match practice can restrict the team’s performance under pressure.

The newcomer to the Championships this year is Centurion Korfball Club (Gauteng North). With three National Senior players, (Werner Basson, Elsandri van Niekerk and JP Jacobs), one national Under 23 player (Ignus Basson), three national Under 19 players (Tessie Esterhuizen, Ettienne Stander and Clarissa Nel) and three national Under 16 players (JP Cassel, Jurgens Banninga and Christie Theÿse), this looks like a good team, at least on paper, although in the past it was shown that the performance on the weekend was what was important.

The Coaches of the National Senior and Under 23 Teams have indicated that they will attend the Championships and take a good look at all the matches and players with the aim of identifying new talent for the upcoming national training camps. These training camps will be the start of the preparation for the Senior World Championships ( Czech Republic) in 2007 and the Under 23 World Championships in 2008 (Chinese Taipei).

There will also be something for the referees during the weekend. A panel was appointed to evaluate the performances of the referees during the pool matches and this panel will rank the referees accordingly. At stake is honor to officiate in the final match on Sunday to determine places one and two.
